深入解读

Aftermath 这个单词比较好记，可以简单拆解为 after + math 。不过这里的 math 却并不是指现在熟知的“数学”，而是源自古英语方言 mæð （割草）。

众所周知，草跟韭菜一样，是割了一茬又一茬。当然，能被人专门收割的草不是普通的野草，而是供饲养的牲畜食用的牧草。那么 aftermath 的本义也就是指在同一块地里已经被收割一次后的“再生草、再萌草”或者说“第二茬牧草”。与之类似的表达还有 aftercrop, aftergrass, lattermath 等。

由于再生草的品质往往不如第一茬的，因此到了17世纪50年代后， aftermath 开始发展出现在的主要含义，即喻指战争、事故等不快事件的“后果、余波”或“结束后的一段时期”，暗含后果像缓慢生长的牧草一样姗姗来迟之意，比如：
